Men’s mental health: the challenge no one disputes

For decades, men have been socialised to appear robust, self-sufficient and emotionally unalterable. Manifestations such as ‘men don’t cry’ or ‘you have to put up with it like a man’ have fostered a culture of silence about men’s mental health. However, the data reveal a worrying reality: men have significantly higher suicide rates than women and are less likely to seek psychological help.

A hidden problem

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 75% of suicide attempts in Europe are made by men. The American Psychological Association (APA) indicates that men are less likely to express their feelings and seek therapy, which worsens disorders such as depression and anxiety. The pressure to conform to a model of masculinity based on self-management and emotional resilience hinders many individuals from identifying when they need assistance.

Additionally, suppression of emotions impacts men not only on themselves, but also on their personal relationships. Research has shown that men who have trouble expressing their emotions are more likely to form conflictual relationships and to resort to unhealthy coping strategies, such as excessive alcohol consumption or overwork.

Breaking the Silence: Renewed emotional education

In the Emotionally Respectful Men (ERM) programme, we work with young men to deconstruct these myths and promote a more responsive and emotionally healthy masculinity. Through workshops and activities, we have found that by providing the right environment, men can foster a greater ability to express their emotions without fear of being played.

Change happens in dialogue

If we are to reduce the worrying numbers of suicide and depression in men, it is essential to change the discourse on masculinity. Discussing mental health is not a sign of fragility, but of courage. Establishing places where men have the possibility to express themselves freely and receive professional assistance without discrimination is the start towards a fairer and healthier society.

At ERM, we will continue to promote this transformation, fostering a masculinity that allows men to be genuine, without fear of expressing their feelings.
